Robin York “Searching/Fall”
I read recently that "people are what they have always been". I thought about this and in essence we are born with traits and personalities that develop and evolve, making us who we become. My mother would tell me the story of me being a five-year-old, making art with a friend. Not pleased with her attempt, I asked her if I could help her make it pretty. Thus began the path of becoming an artist and teacher. I have always been an artist in some form or fashion. It is when I pick up pastels, brushes, pencils, dyes or clay that my perspective dives deeper, focusing and solving the puzzle of creativity. My artwork is a visual story reflective of the people, places and things that bring me joy. Despite the intensity involved when working, I find that making art is a refuge, a comforter and a soother. Art is a great part of our lives. It is the clothes we wear, the cars we drive, and how we decorate our homes. It is the cut of our hair, the colors of our gardens, and the quilt that gives us comfort. Art is the food we make and even how we sign our name. To create is an intrinsic desire. It is a deep and absorbing process. Art in its many forms is an outlet of expression and communication carried out so that others might see, hear, feel, and share the experience with the creator. The message could be one of love, sorrow, opinion, joy or sadness. I create to capture a moment, a feeling, or an environment that has been meaningful to me. When absorbed in the act of creating my results have been both beautiful and something not so beautiful. Using my imagination and encouraging others to do so is essential to who I am." -Robin York
